SILCHAR: In a complaint filed before the Sub Divisional Officer (Civil) of Lakhipur sub division of Cachar on Tuesday, All Assam Rongmei Naga Students' Union (AARNSU) shared its contents with the media persons at a press-meet here. The Union condemned the uncalled for and unprovoked brutal assault on one of their colleagues, Robert Rongmei, a bright LLM student of Assam University and joint secretary of their organisation, on the twilight hours of last Friday. This is not the solitary instance, but just one of the series of harassment and assault on tribal people in general by some unruly goons whom the Union members identified as local residents of Pailapool area, just 3 km down Lakhipur town.

The Union members alleged when tribal people from their hamlets come for marketing in the Pailapool area and also for medical check up at a clinic and treatment at Emmanuel rural hospital at late evening or night, the behaviour and attitude of locals are towards them are not at all civilized. It has further been alleged tribal students who stay at hostels or rented homes for pursuing education in schools or colleges get the same kind of treatment from the local boys who quite naturally are scared. The Union members fail to understand why tribal people should be subjected to uncivilised treatment.

AARNSU leaders regret the fact the Rongmei or any other tribal group of people are law abiding citizens and have never tried to do harm to any fellow persons. And there is not any instance of the same. The Union appeals to the higher authorities concerned to take appropriate action against the miscreants involved in the assault case who can be easily identified with little vigilance by the police. Unless the menace is checked, AARNSU will be forced to resort to mass agitation.
